Why documentary family photography has my heart…
There’s two questions I get asked pretty much every time I tell someone that I’m a documentary family photographer:
What is documentary family photography? - and
Why do you photograph that way?
The first one I’ve answered in a previous blog post. So lets dig into why I make photographs in a documentary or photojournalistic way.
I want to remember not only what life looked like, but how it felt, and I want you to be able to do the same. And in my opinion unposed and candid photographs can convey that feeling so much better. So many feelings cannot be captured in a posed photograph. Many people feel slightly awkward when posed for photograph, I do for sure. My kids flat out refuse to cooperate. Unposed photographs take the pressure of “performing” away.
Unposed photographs show you as you truly are. They show how you lived, how you loved and how laughed and sometimes cried together, how you cared for each other.
Documentary photography is my way of holding up a mirror and showing you that your life is just right, that you are enough, that you are perfect the way you are. And I hope that your kids will see the same. I hope they’ll see how fantastic and how awesome they are and how much they’re loved.
My photographs allow you to remember what life felt like when you look back at them in years to come. Those photographs are priceless and will become even more invaluable as time goes by.
Wondering if you’d love a documentary session just as much as I do? Let’s chat!
